Al Jazeera: 'We're going to the land where the giant men wear skirts'

July, 2019, I made this social video for Al Jazeera English on Rossana Leal who set up the Hastings and Rother Buddy Project to help Syrian families settle and adjust to life in on the south coast of England.

The project pairs local volunteers (buddies) with Syrian families, who fled the conflict in Syrian and have been living in refugee camps, to provide support and guidance on navigating daily life, whether going to the supermarket, registering with GPs, applying to university, speaking English and organising socials.

The project has become a community hub and Rossana was inspired to start the project following her experience as a child in the early 1980s, when she came to the UK with her brothers and sisters and parents who had fled persecution in Pinochet’s Chile.

Rossana and her family received a wonderfully warm welcome from a community of Scottish miners (‘the land where giant men wear skirts’), it’s something she’s never forgotten and felt compelled to set up HRBP to counter the divisive, hateful narrative around migrants and refugees.
